Bidder selected for building and operating airport hotel

The airport hotel at Jože Pučnik Airport in Ljubljana will be built by Vegrad d.d., and will be operated by the Rezidor Hotel Group under its Park Inn brand. The hotel will open by 30 September 2010.

The call for bids was published this June by Aerodrom Ljubljana, the operator of the airport. The subject of the bid was the building and operation of a hotel in the business zone at the airport. The primary policy in building the business zone has been that Aerodrom Ljubljana is not an investor in the facilities, but leases the land out. The terms and conditions of the tender stated that the hotel had to be operated by an established international hotel group that operates at least 20 hotels, had to meet four-star standards, and had to offer at least 150 rooms, a conference centre, a restaurant and a modern fitness and wellness centre.

Four bidders submitted bids by the deadline. After a thorough review of the bids, two bidders were selected for the second stage of further negotiations: Vegrad d.d. and Austrian company WPG d.o.o. The two bidders proposed the same renamed hotel group as the operator of the hotel. The bid review commission selected Vegrad d.d. as the best bidder.

The hotel is the latest in a series of development investments at the airport. Aerodrom Ljubljana is currently building a north car park, and is completing the process of obtaining a building permit for expanding the airport apron, which will be built by the spring of next year. The inventories for the new T2 terminal are also being finalised. A Europe-wide tender for the terminal will be published in December or January, and building will commence next spring if there are no objections. It should be completed by early 2011, and will be opened in May of the same year. The renovation of the runway, another multi-storey car park, and the moving of the regional road running past the airport are also planned.
