Slovenia Control begins upgrading its Instrument Landing System (ILS)
Ljubljana, 1 June 2012 - Today Slovenia Control, Ltd (KZPS) will begin upgrading its instrument landing system at Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport. The upgrade is aimed at maintaining adequate system safety, reliability and availability and the airport’s current class designation (CAT IIIb). The project is expected to last from the beginning of June until late August, a period when reduced visibility is statistically least likely.
The project will include the replacement of the system’s electronic equipment, antennas and cable infrastructure. The upgrading of the ILS system will cost EUR 1 million and will be fully covered by KZPS’s own funds. The project will progress in three phases, beginning with the shutting off of the ILS system, construction work and the installation of equipment. After this the new ILS system will go live under CAT I conditions. The final phase will be the certification of the system for operation under CAT III conditions and the beginning of its CAT IIIb operation.
Says the managing director of KZPS, Dr Franc Željko Županič: “Ensuring safe and efficient air traffic is the basic principle of our work. The new system will meet international standards in the long term and ensure continuing technical modernisation."
The upgrading of the ILS system will provide users with technical capabilities for landing in fog conditions in the long term. The refurbishment of the ILS system is also welcomed by the chairman of the board of Aerodrom Ljubljana, d. d., Zmago Skobir: "Our airport has the best technology in the region, and the upgraded ILS system, which allows landing even in conditions of very poor visibility, will further enhance our position. The upgraded system will be reliable, improving traffic regularity and safety."
During the renovation of the system, air traffic will take place smoothly in the event of inadequate visibility, and we therefore do not expect any inconveniences in terms of delays or aircraft diversions. If poor visibility does occur, its low statistical probability notwithstanding, near-by airports will be available as alternatives.
