Latin evening with Vasilij Žbogar at the airport

A Latin dance evening took place at Ljubljana Airport passenger terminal on Saturday 17 September. The dancefloor filled up with more than 100 Latin dance fans, who were treated to a wonderful view of the airport spron and aircrafts. The climax of the evening came with appearances by a Brazilian dancer and by Olympic silver medallist Vasilij Žbogar.

Slovenia’s athletes scored some superb successes at this year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, winning four medals: judo player Tina Trstenjak, who won gold, canoeist Peter Kauzer, silver medallist in the whitewater slalom, judo player Ana Velenšek (bronze) and Vasilij Žbogar, who won silver in the Finn Class sailing. The 2016 Olympics were also indelibly marked by Latin music and dance – two essential components of Brazilian culture. Every year Rio plays host to the largest dance carnival in the world, bringing up to two million people onto the streets in a single day.

Aerodrom Ljubljana, proud sponsor of Slovenia’s Olympic team, decided to combine the public’s joy at the team’s success with a little bit of Brazilian spirit, and to drape itself in the colours of carnival at Ljubljana Airport. Last Saturday it held an Olympic-themed Latin evening, where pride in Slovenian sport, some passionate dance moves and a relaxed atmosphere all combined in an unforgettable series of events.

Aerodrom Ljubljana decided to turn part of the passenger terminal (the departures hall) into a dance arena. In the first part of the event, participants were taught a series of samba and salsa moves by members of the Salsateca dance academy. Predictably fascinated and enthused, they lost no time in mastering the temperamental moves of these beloved Latin dance forms, going on to test their new skills in free expression and a series of entertaining dance performances. An explosive performance by a dancer in full Brazilian carnival costume ensured a genuine carnival atmosphere that brought even the shyest observers to their feet. A samba workshop was held for participants after the introductory performance.

When the event was joined by Olympic silver medallist Vasilij Žbogar, the pride and amazement of onlookers and participants was complete. This friendly and approachable athlete shared his impressions of Rio with the public and talked about how he got started in sailing. We looked back together at the wonderful moments and noisy receptions at the airport, when he flew home after his monumental efforts and superb results at the Games.

There was a dance challenge and an Olympic quiz offering attractive prizes. There were superb cocktails on offer, including the traditional Brazilian caipirinha, all served up by Avionček. The event was joined by Radio Antena’s lively host Uroš Bitenc, DJ Goffy saw to the tunes, and there were breathtaking views across the airport complex to the waiting aircrafts.

Aerodrom Ljubljana regularly organises special events at the airport to celebrate the Olympic Games, with the aim of notifying passengers and visitors of our athletes’ performances and of spreading the Olympic spirit. This year we invited passengers to dance to samba rhythms and support our Olympians before boarding their flight. In collaboration with the Salsateca dance academy, we organised fun dance performances for the two weeks of the Games. Despite some initial wariness, passengers began to enjoy the opportunity to see some proper Latin dancing as they waited for their flight.
