New cold store for pharmaceuticals

Zg.Brnik, 7. 1. 2021 -  A new cold store designed for storing pharmaceutical shipments that need to be kept at temperatures of 2° to 8°C came online at the Fraport Slovenija cargo warehouse before the holidays. At 150 cubic metres, the cold store will double the capacity to store cold-chain cargo, which accounts for a few percent of the total cargo at the warehouse.  The new facility will also improve reliability in the storage of pharmaceutical products.

“For pharmaceutical products it is vital to ensure that the right temperature is maintained throughout transportation. The IATA has drawn up a special manual with precisely defined procedures for handling pharmaceuticals and other perishables, which ensure that the cargo reaches its final destination in precisely the right condition. And of course temperature is the greatest challenge,” said  Tomaž Prezelj, Cargo Handling Manager.

“For pharmaceutical products it is vital to ensure that the right temperature is maintained throughout transportation.”

Pharmaceutical shipments make up fully a third of the goods handled by Fraport Slovenija’s cargo warehouse. They are divided into three categories according to temperature requirements. Frozen shipments are stored at -18°C, while controlled cool shipments may be held at temperatures of 2° to 8°C. The third category is shipments that require controlled room temperature of 15° to 25°C or controlled extended room temperature of 2° to 25°C. Of the total of 5,000 tonnes of pharmaceutical shipments each year, the largest volume is in the controlled extended room temperature category.
