Increased offer of flights from Ljubljana Airport
in Summer Season 2022

Zg. Brnik, 14. 3. 2022 -  Increased travel demand shows that European aviation is emerging from the grip of the Covid-19 crisis. Compared to last year, Ljubljana Airport is expecting an enlarged offer of flights in the coming summer season. At its peak, the number of weekly frequencies of scheduled airlines will increase significantly comparing to last year. A strong charter season is also expected.

Although the very last adjustments of the summer timetable for 2022 are still in progress, current forecasts show that in the busiest weeks of the summer season there will be about 140 flights available per week from Ljubljana Airport. Due to the situation during the Ukrainian-Russian crisis, the flights of Aeroflot to Moscow and Rossiya Airlines to St. Petersburg have been cancelled until further notice. For the same reason, most probably the previously announced Windrose flights to Kyiv will not be established.

Charter passengers represented about a fifth of all passenger traffic at Ljubljana Airport last year and it is expected that their number will be even higher this year. The offering of charter flights will give a greater choice of destinations. According to current forecasts, Turkey, Spain, numerous Greek islands, Jordan, Madeira, Egypt, Tunisia, Malta, Azores, Albania, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Italy, Iceland, Latvia and Zanzibar will be, among others, offered by travel agencies that organize seasonal summer charters from Ljubljana Airport.

"The epidemiological situation in Europe and around the world has been improving recently, which has been followed by the increased demand for air travel. It is encouraging that the number of carriers and destinations will exceed those that we had just before the Covid-19 pandemic started. Also, the frequency of flights is significantly increasing compared to 2021/2022 winter season. We will welcome new connections and await the return of those which were interrupted due to the health crisis. We are also looking forward to a successful charter season. We will start welcoming the first charter passengers already in April," Dr Babett Stapel, Managing Director of Fraport Slovenija commented.

Ljubljana Airport faces the busiest months during the summer seasons, so its success has a significant impact on the yearly passenger figures. It is forecasted that Fraport Slovenija will handle twice as many passengers this year compared to 2021. On the other hand, this represents 52 percent of passenger traffic from the pre-pandemic year 2019.

These forecasts are in line with the forecasts of the association of airports ACI World[1]. On general, international passenger air traffic is expected to continue to recover more slowly than domestic one (which Slovenia does not have). According to the ACI's predictions, international air passenger transport is expected to reach 53.8 percent of the 2019 volume in this year (and domestic passenger traffic 84 percent of the 2019 volume).

Babett Stapel adds: "We are welcoming the re-establishment of the state support scheme for the promotion of Slovenia's air connectivity, which was approved by the European Commission recently. This will undoubtedly contribute to the readiness of carriers to strengthen the presence and expand the network of flights from Ljubljana Airport. It will also give a necessary push to a faster traffic recovery. Indeed, it is difficult for Fraport Slovenija after first managing the   bankruptcy of our hub carrier, followed by two years of COVID-19 crisis management to see our industry, actually the world, seamlessly entering into another crisis. We strongly hope that the war between Ukraine and Russia will end as soon as possible for the sake of the lives of all human beings involved and that the situation will not be increasing the negative impact on global economy and aviation activity."
