With the opening of the new Taxiway J, a multi-million-euro investment at Ljubljana Airport successfully completed

With today’s opening of the new Taxiway J at Ljubljana Airport, Fraport Slovenija has successfully completed one of the largest investment projects in airside infrastructure in the past decade. The project, which began in March 2024 and also included the renovation of part of the existing Taxiway A, has delivered a new taxiway providing a proper turning area for the largest aircraft at the western threshold of the runway. Its construction will help ensure the airport’s long-term competitiveness.

With the aim of enhancing the airport’s competitiveness, improving operational efficiency, and maintaining the highest safety standards, Fraport Slovenija, the operator of Ljubljana Airport, launched the project for the construction of the new Taxiway J and renovation of part of the existing Taxiway A in 2024. The newly built Taxiway J, inaugurated today, allows for optimal turning of the largest aircraft and offers maximum flexibility for aircraft maneuvering between the main apron and the runway. It also provides more space for the maintenance of airside surfaces and airport infrastructure.

“The total investment in the construction of the new Taxiway J and the renovation of part of Taxiway A – a project that significantly upgrades and develops Slovenia’s airport infrastructure and strengthens our position as the most modernly equipped airport in the region – amounts to €5.35 million. With the successful completion of the project, we have, in accordance with modern standards, provided an appropriate turning area for the largest aircraft at runway threshold 12, thereby taking an important step forward in strengthening the airport’s operational capabilities,” said Boštjan Šijanec, Director of Infrastructure at Fraport Slovenija.

The project to build the new Taxiway J and renovate part of Taxiway A was carried out in several phases. Between March and June 2024, construction work by Gorenjska Gradbena Družba included asphalting almost 9,000 m² of new surfaces for Taxiway J and renewing nearly 20,000 m² of asphalt on the existing Taxiway A. The old asphalt removed from Taxiway A was recycled at an asphalt plant and reused at other locations.

After the completion of construction works in the summer of 2024, Taxiway A was returned to use, while Taxiway J underwent electrical installations and the setup of the airfield lighting control system. This system is essential, as lighting on airside surfaces plays a crucial role in ensuring safe aircraft landings and take-offs. Approximately 35 kilometers of cables and 59 new LED lights were installed on Taxiway J for illumination purposes. These lights were integrated into a special control system, providing constant and reliable feedback on their operational status—whether switched on, off, or faulty. In addition, 10 new signs were installed to clearly mark the new Taxiway J.

To strengthen the competitiveness and importance of Ljubljana Airport for the region, Fraport Slovenija continues to invest in airport infrastructure, equipment, and IT technology. Since 2014, over €83 million has been invested in these areas, supporting the modernization and efficiency of the airport. The most significant recent investment was the €21 million construction of the new terminal, which opened in 2021. The current investment cycle focuses on airside infrastructure, including the ongoing apron renovation and reorganization project, scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. In the coming years, the company’s investments will also focus on sustainability, with Ljubljana Airport aiming to become carbon neutral by 2045.
