The modern passenger terminal, from which the first flight to Antalya departed in July 2021, has significantly shaped the airport’s development over the past five years. The investment delivered a contemporary and efficient travel environment, expanded commercial and passenger services, and created improved working conditions for airport employees. Alongside the terminal project, Ljubljana Airport also introduced a new baggage handling facility, upgraded parking infrastructure, a new bus station and landscaped public areas, representing a comprehensive modernisation of the airport campus.
»The passenger terminal is much more than an infrastructure investment. It is the front door to Slovenia and plays a defining role in how visitors experience our country from the very first moment. Five years after its opening, it has fully delivered on its promise, strengthening the quality, efficiency and attractiveness of Ljubljana Airport while providing the capacity and flexibility needed for future growth. We are proud of what has been achieved so far, but our ambition goes further: to continuously strengthen Ljubljana Airport’s position as the preferred airport for passengers, airlines and partners across the wider region,« said Jürgen Deischl, Managing Director of Fraport Slovenija.
Stable growth and expansion of flight offerings
The new passenger terminal opened during one of the most challenging periods in aviation history, as the industry was gradually recovering from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, Ljubljana Airport has recorded consistent growth, increasing from just over 430,000 passengers in 2021 to more than one million passengers in 2023, when traffic surpassed the pre-pandemic level for the first time since 2019. Growth continued throughout 2024 and 2025, with annual passenger numbers reaching 1.6 million.
During this period, Ljubljana Airport has strengthened its role as Slovenia’s international gateway, supported by a diversified airline portfolio, expanded connectivity and continued improvements in service quality. Among the most popular destinations over the past five years have been Istanbul, Frankfurt, Zurich, Belgrade and Paris, highlighting the importance of Ljubljana Airport’s network of leading European hub carriers and regional connectivity providers. Today, 24 airlines operate 30 direct destinations from Ljubljana, providing passengers with a broad range of travel options and onward access to global markets. The network is set to grow further during the upcoming winter season, when airBaltic will introduce flights to Tenerife, while easyJet will launch a new service to London Luton, further enhancing connectivity for both leisure and business travellers.
Continuous development and upgrades
Over the past five years, the terminal has established itself as the airport’s central passenger hub and has continuously evolved to meet changing traveller expectations. The range of services has expanded significantly, offering passengers a broader selection of food and beverage concepts, retail opportunities and comfortable waiting areas.
At the same time, the terminal has provided airlines with the infrastructure, operational efficiency and flexibility needed to support network development and future growth.
Looking ahead, Ljubljana Airport will continue investing in service quality, digitalisation, operational excellence and sustainability. Building on the foundations created by the new terminal, the airport aims to further strengthen its position as the airport of choice for Slovenia and the wider region, while remaining a reliable and attractive long-term partner for airlines.
To mark the terminal’s fifth anniversary, the airport also organised a special activation for passengers and employees, featuring a wheel of fortune and prize draw with a variety of practical rewards, celebrating the milestone together with the airport community.
