A Slovenian passenger travelling to Zurich with Swiss International Air Lines became the airport’s millionth passenger of the year. She was welcomed with a special surprise at the boarding gate, where the airport team presented her with two return tickets on the Ljubljana–Zurich route to commemorate the occasion.
»Congratulations to Ljubljana Airport on reaching the remarkable milestone of one million passengers in 2026. This achievement highlights the airport's important role in connecting Slovenia with Europe and the world. Slovenia is an important market for Lufthansa Group, and Ljubljana remains a valued gateway within our network. Through our airlines and hubs in Zurich, Frankfurt, Munich and Brussels, we provide Slovenian customers with access to destinations worldwide for both business and leisure travel.
The SWISS service between Ljubljana and Zurich is an important part of this network, offering convenient connections via Zurich to destinations across Europe and beyond. We are proud to contribute to this milestone and congratulate Ljubljana Airport and all partners involved on this impressive achievement,« said Stephan Linhart, Senior Director Sales Central & Eastern Europe, Israel and Türkiye, Lufthansa Group.
Commenting on the achievement, Jürgen Deischl, Managing Director of Fraport Slovenija, said: »Welcoming our millionth passenger exactly three weeks earlier than last year is a clear sign of Ljubljana Airport’s sustained momentum. It reflects growing demand, additional airline capacity and the successful expansion and diversification of our flight network. This milestone is the result of the dedication of our airport team, the trust of our airline partners and the close cooperation of all relevant stakeholders. Our ambition is to further strengthen Ljubljana Airport’s position as the airport of choice for Slovenia and the wider Alps-Adriatic region by expanding connectivity, ensuring reliable operations and delivering an excellent passenger experience.«
During the first six months of the year, 790,238 passengers travelled through the airport, representing an increase of nearly 15 % compared with the same period last year. Based on ACI Europe figures, Ljubljana Airport ranked as the third fastest-growing airport in the European Union in the first half of 2026, following airports in Slovakia and Malta.
July 2026 was the best July in the airport's history, with 208,638 passengers handled during the month. The monthly total exceeded 200,000 passengers for the first time since 2019, reflecting the airport's continued traffic growth.
During the summer season, Ljubljana Airport offers 30 scheduled routes operated by 25 airlines. The most popular scheduled destinations this year include Istanbul, Frankfurt, Zurich, London, Amsterdam. Together, most of these services provide direct access to important business and leisure markets as well as extensive onward connectivity across Europe and worldwide.
Charter flights also remain an important part of Ljubljana Airport’s summer offering, complementing the scheduled network and providing passengers with convenient access to popular holiday destinations. The most sought-after charter destinations this year include Hurghada (Egypt), Antalya (Turkey), Monastir (Tunisia), Crete and Rhodes, with strong demand also recorded for several Greek islands. In this segment, Ljubljana Airport expects to handle approximately 130,000 passengers by the end of the year.
Network expansion continues into the winter season
The continued development of Ljubljana Airport’s network will extend into the 2026/27 winter season. easyJet will add a new connection to London Luton from 26 October, while airBaltic will launch a new service to Tenerife from 30 October. The two routes will further broaden the range of direct travel options available from Ljubljana.
Supported by sustained passenger demand, additional airline capacity and the continued development of direct connectivity, Ljubljana Airport expects to welcome around 1.7 million passengers by the end of 2026.
